Holiday Stress Relief for Mothers: Managing Stress and Staying Balanced During the Festive Season
Dec 17, 2024The holiday season is such a beautiful time for family and tradition, but it can also be a whirlwind of stress and busyness—especially for expectant mothers. For me, I feel blessed to have most of my family close by here in Pasadena and Altadena, where I was born and raised. Unlike many of you, I don’t have to brave airports or long car rides with my little ones.
In my family, Christmas Eve holds a special place. My Italian roots come alive with the tradition of the "Seven Fishes." Everyone contributes a fish dish, and last year, I brought clam cakes made from my grandmother's recipe. They were a hit, and preparing them was a comforting connection to her memory. Traditions like this remind me of the love and togetherness the holidays bring.
But even with all the joy, the season can take its toll. The short days, early sunsets, and endless to-do lists can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed, and for moms-to-be, the weight of the holidays can feel especially heavy.
As mothers—whether we’re expecting or already raising little ones—we are often the emotional anchors of our families. Our mental and physical well-being sets the tone for our households, like the lighthouse guiding ships safely to shore. That’s why prioritizing self-care during this season isn’t just important—it’s essential.
HERE ARE SOME TOOLS AND TIPS TO HELP YOU STAY GROUNDED, BALANCED, AND BRIGHT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:
Quick Nervous System Resets
When stress builds up, these small but powerful actions can help you calm an overstimulated nervous system:
- Run your hands under cold water for a few moments.
- Gently pull on your earlobes and hold for a few seconds—it’s surprisingly soothing.
- Turn your head to one side while looking in the opposite direction with your eyes. Hold for a few seconds, then switch.
Reconnect with the Season
If you’re feeling ungrounded or disconnected, take a moment to journal with these prompts:
- What are you most proud of yourself for this year?
- What has been the most challenging part of the year?
- What advice would you give yourself at this time last year about the year to come?
- What do you love most about yourself?
This simple act of reflection can bring clarity and gratitude, helping you feel more present and aligned with the season.
The Gift of Receiving
As mothers, we are so used to giving—to our families, to our friends, to everyone who needs us. But the holidays are also a time to receive. Allow yourself to slow down and accept the care and love you so often give to others.
- Treat yourself to a warm bath with soothing tea or light a candle and let the quiet moments fill you.
- Come in for a massage—allow someone else to nurture you. Or explore a self-care product from our boutique, whether for you or a loved one.
- Find joy in small acts: listen to a favorite song, sway gently to the music, or wrap your arms around yourself in a comforting hug.
And don’t forget to thank yourself. So often, we rush into planning the next year, but pause for a moment to reflect on how much you’ve accomplished this year. You’ve likely done more than you realize.
Gratitude is Powerful
Gratitude isn’t just a nicety—it’s transformative. When you take the time to acknowledge your efforts and give yourself love and credit, it shifts the way you experience the world around you. This season, let gratitude for yourself and your journey be a guiding light.
I hope you find a nugget or two in these words to help you not only survive this busy time of year but also truly enjoy it. You are worthy of love, rest, and moments of slowness. You matter, mama.
Take care of yourself this holiday season so that you can continue to shine your light brightly on those who matter most.
With all my love,
Sparrow
